Why do we need to learn this?
… is the most reoccurring question that I receive from my high school students. I always laugh when I hear that question because it is one that students have been in cahoots with since the existence of formal education.
I work with students from all age groups and one issue that remains constant is their ability to understand (I know harsh, but that’s the reality of it). Unfortunately, our education system is one that fosters regurgitation and memorization rather than comprehension.
I remember being in high school and posing the same question to my teachers, however, they all roughly elicited the same response, “You just have to.”
What does Learning Curve Brampton do that is different from formal education?
We challenge students’ critical thinking and comprehension skills by providing them an opportunity to read real opinions and criticize ideas that exist in the world today.
By giving them this article to read, I pave way for them to individually answer the question at hand; rather than find a meaningless response from me that will only justify their resentment of doing their work entirely. This article expresses various ideas that portray shifts in societal expectations, especially in the realm of academia.
At Learning Curve, we typically assign this to students to read for homework alongside having to take notes and write a brief summary. When they come to class the following week, we discuss the contents of the article and I ask whether they agree or disagree with any of the claims made. I then pose the same question to them… Why do you have to learn this?
